SUGGESTED EMAIL

1. Copy the text below (select it all using the mouse then press Ctrl and 'C' together).

Dear Labor MLA,

At any time, as many as 250,000 battery hens are kept in barren wire cages in the ACT. These hens live in less space than an A4 piece of paper, they cannot spread their wings and the ends of their beaks are cut off.

It is appalling that these animals are treated like this in our community. Hens should be able to walk, run, scratch, bask in the sun, breathe clean air, and lay eggs in a nest (not in a wire cage).

Legislation to ban the production of battery cage eggs was recently tabled in the ACT Legislative Assembly and, unlike the stalled 1997 Bill, it does not seek to ban the sale of cage eggs so will not need the approval of other States.

A survey carried out locally in late 2005 showed that this legislation has community support – nearly three quarters (73%) of those asked felt that the cages should be banned.

There is a world-wide move away from battery cages – the European Union has decided to ban them from 2012 and many large UK and US retailers have also announced they will no longer sell cage eggs.

I ask that you please support the Greens’ Bill and ban the production of battery eggs in the ACT.

Thank you and I look forward to your reply on this matter.

Yours sincerely,
[insert your name and address]
